The Centre for Geographical Studies, Patna is an autonomous institution established by Government of Bihar in 2018 and it started to function in 2020. This Centre for Geographical Studies is the first Geographical research Centre in India which is established and fully financed by the Govt. of Bihar. Statutory provisions provide complete autonomy for any kind of decision to promote quality research. The focus of this Centre will be to develop quality knowledge and skills comparable to any leading research institution of the world. As the Centre is established by the Govt. of Bihar with an understanding that geographers may contribute in resolving the issues of backwardness, regional socio-economic disparity, disaster mitigation and welfare of under privileged groups. Geography is the subject of interdisciplinary nature. It addresses spaciotemporal analysis in most of research work. So, the aspiration of the state seems genuine and the centre is gearing itself to respond positively as an instrument/institution to suggest the state for resolving the problem. However, it researches concern will not only remain for Bihar but beyond the territorial limits with objectives of the solutions of socio economics and disaster related problems around the world.
The Centre for Geographical Studies will primarily focus on planning problems. This Centre will serve as a public planning and policy-research Centre contributing towards the state and eventually towards national development policies and strategies. Eventually it will emerge as world class education institution. The activities of the Centre will not be confined to research, consultancy and training programmes but to take philosophy of planning beyond academia and into the public sphere.
The Centre will think in public and will address the complex relations between the limits that the natural world imposes and the possibilities that human action can create for its sustainable future.
Centre for Geographical Studies will be a cornerstone of learning and of academic excellence. It will be the destination of choice for meritorious students. This will be achieved by actively fostering learning and enquiry.
